Practical Mental Health Training

 A one day mental health course created by Stu specifically for those that work with young people in an outdoor environment. The course is designed to teach you the main signs and symptoms of mental ill health and how to provide initial support. This course is accredited by the Institute of Outdoor Learning

Aims of the course: 

Course learning outcomes


  • To preserve life where a person may be at risk of ​harm to themselves or others
  • To provide help to prevent the mental health issue from becoming more serious before professional help arrives
  • To provide comfort to a person with a mental health issue
  • To reduce stigma and discrimination
  • To improve own health and wellbeing

  • Provide initial help to someone experiencing mental distress
  • ​Guide the person towards appropriate professional help
  • Be mindful of own wellbeing
  • ​Understand the difference between mental health and mental illness
  • Understand the consequences of stigma
  • Understand the consequences of stress on mental health and how to manage stress
  •  Recognise the symptoms of mental ill health
